The Guide to Adult Bike Sizes and Fit

When it comes to the most enjoyable bicycle ride, the fit of your bike is important, so how do you know which bike is the best fit for you?

Schwinn bikes come in two variations: one size that fits the average population of adults, and other bikes that come in different sizes (just like clothes).

Schwinn Bikes that Come in One Size

If you are an average-sized adult male or female, you will be able to fit 90% of Schwinn’s bicycles that come in a single size. Remember that bell curve they taught you in high school? You can think of Schwinn single-sized bikes like that, with the average height of an adult male or female sitting at the top of the curve.

This means that if you are a taller woman it may make more sense for you to choose a “men's” bike which has a larger frame than the “women's” model, and vice-versa.

Schwinn Bikes That Come in Sizes

If you are looking for a more perfect fit you can buy a Schwinn bicycle that comes in a variety of sizes. In general, the following height ranges apply for Schwinn bicycles that come in sizes.

Bike Size

Extra Small

Extra Large

Seat Tube Length

Rider Height Range

5'0" - 5'3"

5'3" - 5'7"

5'7" - 5'10"

5'10" - 6'1"

6'1" - 6'4"

Pro Tip:
Kids' bike sizes are often indicated by wheel size, but for adults, the size of the frame is what matters most. Frame size changes to accommodate taller riders.

What if I got my bike size wrong?

If you are riding a bicycle that is just a bit too small or too large, don’t worry, you can still get a proper fit by making a few small adjustments:

  • Move your bike seat forward or back to adjust your hip position when sitting down.
  • Buy a longer or shorter stem to adjust the reach to your handlebars, or the angle at which your handlebars sit.
  • Buy a different bicycle seat post: you can adjust the height with a longer, or shorter seat post. They also make posts with different amounts of offset forward and back to help adjust your position on the bike.
  • Give it time. Sometimes a new bike or position (due to frame geometry) can take some time to get used to.

Different Bikes Have Different Fits

If you compare mountain bikes to road or cruiser bikes, you'll instantly see differences in the frame and overall fit. Finding the right fit for you isn't just about size, but also about style. For example, the slim tires and sleek layout of a road bike is great for riders who want speed but won't be as comfortable for riders who prefer something that feels a bit more sturdy and stable.

This isn't to say that you should rule out a certain type of bike — plenty of riders adapt! As is good practice for any purchase, try before you buy. Do some research to see what frame and style will work best for you (our blog How to Buy the Right Bike for You has some great pointers).
